Choose Your Eggs Wisely

The quality of life of the bird reflects the quality of nutrients you receive from the egg. Here is some EGG-UCATION on which eggs to choose when you’re at the grocery store.

PASTURE RAISED EGGS

Hens that produce pasture-raised eggs have regular access to a large outdoor space that is covered in grass or other vegetation. Research has shown that hens with access to outdoor pastures produce eggs with significantly more omega-3 fatty acids, and  vitamin D than conventional (caged) eggs. Pasture raised is your best option. The darker the yolk the better.

PASTURE RAISED EGGS VS.  ORGANIC EGGS

Hens receive nutrition from their feed, which can either be organic or not. There may be pasture raised eggs that are not organic as they are fed conventional feed that was grown with pesticides or GMOs. It is important to look for the USDA Certified Organic label.

FREE RANGE EGGS

Free range eggs are eggs produced by hens that are set outside of any cage and allowed to naturally forage for their food. They are allowed to be birds. Happy birds lay more eggs, and produce better quality eggs. The happier the hen, the better quality food you are consuming.

CAGE FREE EGGS

Cage free birds do not experience anywhere near the same quality of life as free range birds. These hens are likely not given access to the outdoors. They are stocked at high densities with no limit to the number of birds in a given barn. These birds are given very little space to live. Click Here To Learn More About Cage Free Eggs

REGULAR STORE BOUGHT EGGS

These eggs are laid by birds kept in small cages or the cage free chicken houses. They are fed pelleted foods, live in extremely hot and crowded conditions, and do not live a natural lifestyle. The quality of the egg suffers. These birds are overfed, obese, hormonally imbalanced animals that create low quality eggs.
